Guerneville Man Dies After Shooting With Sonoma County Sheriff's Deputies

GUERNVILLE (KCBS) — Sonoma County sheriff's deputies were involved in a shooting on Monday night that left a man dead in Guernveille.

Sheriff's officials said they received a call that an armed man, identified as 59-year-old Wayne Courtright, was threatening his wife at the Riverlane Resort located across the street from a sheriff's substation.

Courtright's wife contacted dispatchers who told her to leave the area immediately.

She and her 30-year-old daughter arrived at the substation a minute later and told sheriff's deputies that Courtright was drunk, suicidal, and armed with a rifle, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies arrived at the resort and set up a perimeter. 20 minutes later, they said they heard gun shots.

Courtright came outside his residence at about 12 a.m. with a high- powered rifle and began firing shots at deputies who returned fire, the sheriff's office said.

Courtright died during the gun battle but officials said it was unclear if he died from the deputies' gunfire or if he took his own life.
