3-Alarm Fire Threatens SF's Presidio Heights Neighborhood

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/CBS SF) -- Firefighters managed to keep a 3-alarm fire from spreading in San Francisco's Presidio Heights neighborhood.

Smoke from the blaze was visible for several miles.

Fire crews were called to the building near the intersection of Sacramento and Locust streets around 2:32 p.m., fire personnel said.

Firefighters contained the fire around 3:15 p.m., according to a fire dispatcher.

At least a couple of residents were inside the building when the fire broke out, and the American Red Cross was called to provide temporary housing assistance for up to four people, the dispatcher said.

PG&E was also on the scene as of 3:20 p.m. responding to reports of a smell of gas near the building.

The highly flammable, dry wood on the building and the close proximity of the surrounding wooden structures made the fire difficult to contain.

Three units in the building were badly damaged. An adjacent building was also scorched by the flames.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
