Homemade Bomb Found In Antioch Apartment Building

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A homemade bomb was found during a housing inspection in Antioch Wednesday morning, according to police.

During the property inspection around 10:45 a.m. at an eight-unit apartment building in the 200 block of West Third Street code enforcement officers found a suspicious item, police said.

The item appeared to be a homemade explosive device and police were called to the scene.

The building and surrounding homes were evacuated and traffic was shut down on West Second Street, police said.

The Walnut Creek bomb squad responded to the area and was able to render the device inoperable. The bomb had the potential to detonate, police said.

Antioch police are investigating who created the device and why it was in the apartment.

Anyone with information is asked to call Antioch police at (925) 778-2441.
