ConsumerWatch: Same-Day Delivery Services Helping Traditional Stores Stay Competitive

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) - Move over, Amazon and E-Bay, brick-and-mortar stores are getting help providing same-day delivery this holiday season. It's a strategic move intended to help stores compete with online retailers.

San Francisco's Stonestown Galleria is one of the first shopping centers in California to offer same-day delivery. Shoppers drop off their purchases at the mall's Same Day Lounge, and the items are delivered later that day to the customer's home. The service costs $5.00 or less.

"This just allows it to be a more pleasant experience," said mall general manager, Cynthia Eichler.

The service is run by Palo Alto based start-up Deliv.

The service also boasts extra security. Eichler said items are stored in a locked room, until the scheduled delivery time.

A new app called Luna is also offering an interesting option for shoppers. Consumers ship their items directly to the delivery service, then schedule a delivery to their home at their convenience.
