Man Killed In Apparent Solo Scooter Wreck At South Bay Mall

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) - A man was killed in a scooter accident in a shopping center parking lot in Santa Clara early Monday morning, a police lieutenant said.

At about 4:30 a.m., police in San Jose received a call about an accident in a parking lot at 3109 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Santa Clara, near Winchester Boulevard, Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke said.

San Jose police realized the accident actually occurred across the border in Santa Clara and notified police in that city, Clarke said.

Santa Clara officers headed to the scene at the Winchester Shopping Center, across the street from the Westfield Valley Fair mall, and found the man deceased near his motorized scooter, police said.

Police believe that the man had been driving his scooter in the dark lot when he hit a parking stop or the pole of a handicap-parking sign, according to Clarke.

"It's a solo rider on a two-wheel scooter who hit these two objects or one or the other," Clarke said.

The man's name has not yet been released.

Police are still investigating the accident, and anyone with information about it is asked to call the Police Department at (408) 615-4700.
