Interest In Covered California Website Grows; Deadline A Week Away To Be Insured By New Year

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — With just a week left for Californians to sign up for health insurance to be covered on Jan. 1, the Covered California website has suddenly grown busy.

Getting people interested in Covered California last September seemed like an exercise in futility, but that not longer seems to be the case. Enrollment in November doubled over October and as of Dec. 7, about 590,000 applications were submitted and 156,000 people have been enrolled.

"There are 11 different insurance companies to choose from," said Ann Gonzales from Covered California. She also said there are different product-plan combinations.

Covered California Website Sees Surge In Applications As Deadline Nears

While interest has increased in the website, most Californians are still sitting on the sidelines wondering what to do about health care. The state has enlisted 9,000 insurance agents and thousands of counselors to help people navigate the choices.

"We are asking for our agents and our counselors to double up and help with enrollees who need to get their applications in."
