Odd Bay Area December Weather Setting Records
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) - Rarely does sunny and dry weather come with so many oddities, but this extremely dry weather will soon set some all-time records here in the Bay Area.
Spare the Air
Wednesday will be the 11th straight Spare The Air day for the Bay Area. The previous "winter-time" record was five. The same thing that's keeping us dry is also keeping the pollution trapped close to the ground: a stubborn area of high pressure that has not allowed the atmosphere to mix out the haze and pollutants. Things were made worse thanks to the fires burning in Big Sur and Redwood City.
Record Dry
San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Rosa are two weeks away from shattering the all-time records for driest calendar years. It's not even close. We are three inches drier than the record in San Francisco, more than two inches drier than the record in San Jose, and Santa Rosa will officially be two FEET below normal rain-wise if it doesn't rain by Friday.
Reservoir Levels
Why are reservoir levels not at record low levels? Two reasons: First is good water management. We've saved water efficiently from previous not-as-dry years and that's the water we're using now. We can also be extremely thankful for that burst of rain we got right after Thanksgiving last year. That was mainly runoff which ended up in our reservoirs. Without that week of rain (in some cases it rained more that one week than the following year) we would be in a much bigger pickle.
