Polar Vortex Moves Out, Flights Smoother At Bay Area Airports
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Bay Area airports today are reporting a calm period after a wave of continued flight delays and cancellations caused by freezing winter weather that paralyzed much of the Midwest and East Coast this past week.
At SFO, spokesman Doug Yakel said this morning that the only delays the airport is seeing are actually caused by low clouds and fog here in the Bay Area and have nothing to do with the weather in the Northeast.
"We're tapering down in terms of delays and cancellations due to weather in the Northeast," he said. "We only had about 12 flight cancellations today and that's about average to any given day here."
Yakel said that airports in the east and Midwest are returning to normal flight schedules because, although the temperatures remain frigid, there is no precipitation that would create unsafe take-off and arrival conditions.
At Mineta San Jose International Airport, there are no weather-related cancellations today, according to spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes.
"We're happy to report no cancellations today and hopefully not tomorrow either, as JetBlue, which offers 'red-eyes' to JFK and Boston five days a week, does not offer those flights on Tuesdays or Wednesdays," Barnes said.
On Tuesday, two flights to Chicago were canceled, but nothing so far today, she said.
A spokesman with Oakland International Airport said there have been no weather-related impacts to arrivals or departures.
There have been two Southwest cancellations, however, both due to mechanical issues."It is happening slowly, but it's getting back to normal," he said.
