SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A man who was shot at by an off-duty San Francisco police sergeant during a confrontation that stemmed from a fender-bender on Interstate Highway 280 early Sunday morning has been arrested, police said Monday.

The sergeant was involved in a minor collision with the suspect on I-280 around 12:10 a.m., and both pulled off of the highway and stopped near Jerrold Avenue and Bayshore Boulevard to exchange information, police said.

However, during the interaction, the man allegedly punched the female sergeant in the face. She then discharged her gun, and the bullet struck the pavement, and some sort of fragment hit the suspect in the lower body, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The man, identified as 37-year-old Joel Henriquez, refused medical attention, police said.

Henriquez, who was not armed, was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, battery on a police officer, and making threats against an executive officer, according to Esparza.

The sergeant, who has not been identified, has been placed on paid administrative leave as the shooting is investigated. Esparza said she has been with the force for at least 10 years.
