Daily Madden: Why It's Harder To Build An NFL Dynasty?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Seattle Seahawks are the fourth youngest Super Bowl champions. Other young winners -- the Steelers in 1974 and the 49ers in 1981 -- went on to win multiple Super Bowls in subsequent years.John Madden says building a dynasty won't be as easy for the Seahawks.

"I think the game has changed too much," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "There was no free-agency in those days. So once you had those young players, like Pittsburgh did in '74, they were able to keep those guys for a long time. They were able to keep them for as long as they wanted. And you can't do that anymore. You have free agency. You have salary cap problems. But that doesn't mean that (Seattle) can't be good for a long time."

Madden said even if team managers find future stars in low draft choices and free agents, they'll eventually pay top dollar for the talent.

"They don't stay cheap," Madden said. "That's the way the system is set up. Eventually it's going to get you. But having some low draft choices, free agents, cheap players -- you can ride that for awhile."

Madden said for the Seahawks, it's too early to worry about all that.

"Everyone's talking about what's going to happen next year. 'Can Seattle repeat? Who's going to win? If not Seattle, who?' They don't even give them like two days to celebrate." (6:30)
