Oakland Man Charged With Murder In Alleged Drunken Pick-Axe Killing
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - An Oakland man has been charged with murder for allegedly using a pick-axe to kill a 69-year-old woman last Saturday at the East Oakland house that they shared.
Jeff Girard, a 43-year-old recycler who has a prior conviction for grand theft, was charged earlier this week in Alameda County Superior Court and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Tuesday to enter a plea.
Carol Wilson was found at her home in the 1700 block of 103rd Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday by fire crews who responded to an emergency call.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene and her body had suffered "mutilation and mayhem," Oakland police Officer Nicholas Calonge wrote in a probable cause statement filed with the court.
Girard made "a full confession" after he was arrested at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Calonge wrote.
Girard admitted that he drank "a lot of alcoholic beverages" last Friday night and then "blacked out" and swung a pick-axe at Wilson, knocking her down. Girard believed he had killed her, Calonge wrote.
Girard told police that he then panicked "and proceeded to attempt to dismember Wilson's body but gave up and later had a friend call the police," Calonge wrote.
Girard's statement was corroborated by evidence that was recovered at the murder scene, according to Calonge.
Girard, also known as Jeffrey Michael Girard, is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail.
