Man Fatally Struck By Muni Train Identified

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man who was fatally struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway train at the Powell Street Station on Saturday has been identified as 55-year-old Michael Mendez, according to the medical examiner's office.

The Muni train reportedly hit Mendez at the underground Powell Street station at around 2:40 p.m, San Francisco fire Lt. Robert Lopez said.

Mendez' body was found on the tracks, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Lopez said.

Mendez, a transient, could have fallen from the platform onto the tracks in front of the outbound train, according to preliminary information from the police department.

The incident remains under investigation.

Muni service between Van Ness Street and Embarcadero stations was disrupted for nearly four hours while the scene was cleared.
