BART Service Restored Sunday After Friday Derailment

CONCORD (CBS SF) -- Service has been restored on a Bay Area Rapid Transit line after crews worked through the night to repair tracks damaged by a derailed train.

Agency spokesman Jim Allison says trains began running between Pleasant Hill and Pittsburg Bay Point in Contra Costa County just after 8am on Sunday.

Service had been suspended Friday evening after an empty 10-car train derailed on an elevated stretch of track near the Concord station.

The train was under computer control but when it headed into a switching mechanism, the first four cars were thrown off the tracks.

Only the train operator was aboard and was not hurt in the accident.

Shuttle service was deployed to carry passengers east of Pleasant Hill while repairs were under way.
