Shots Fired At SUV On I-580 In Castro Valley, Gunman Sought

CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) -- A SUV carrying two adults and two children was shot at on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley Thursday afternoon, prompting authorities to close the freeway at the height of rush hour.

Officer Eric Thomas of the California Highway Patrol told KPIX 5 that authorities were alerted about a shooting on Westbound 580 near the Interstate 238 interchange around 4 p.m.

Video from Chopper 5 showed at least three bullet holes went through the windshield of the SUV. There are no reports of the driver and passengers being injured.

Authorities closed all lanes of Westbound 580 for about an hour as officers investigated and talked to the victims. Some drivers were seen standing outside of their cars as they waited for the freeway to open. The roadway reopened around 5:45 p.m.

Thomas said police are searching for a silver-colored Ford Focus in connection with the shooting. Police are not sure about the driver's whereabouts. No suspect description has been released.

It is not known if the shooter and victims knew each other of it was an road rage incident, Thomas said.
