Daily Madden: Time To Separate Fans From Players In Basketball Arenas

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A fight broke out between fans and players after fans stormed the court following Utah Valley University's upset win over New Mexico State Thursday night.

"At some point, that has to go away," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew, noting conferences should institute stricter rules for fans.

"There were days that they stormed the field in NFL games. I remember we played Pittsburgh in a game and the fans were down on the filed in the last two minutes of the game and they would ring the field. You think of that now -- how in the heck could we let fans on the field during an NFL game?"

Madden said he's also concerned about court-side security in the NBA.

"They're getting their fans way too close to the players, way too close to the court," Madden said. "I understand that. It will usually go back to it's business, it's money. But if a player in the NBA steps out of bounds, he's sitting in someone's lap... To me there's danger looming right around the corner there." (7:00)
