Suspected DUI Crash Leaves Trail Of Damage To Businesses Along El Cerrito Street

EL CERRITO (CBS SF) -- A suspected drunken driver who sped onto an El Cerrito sidewalk and crashed into multiple businesses tried to flee from officers this morning, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision at Van Fleet and San Pablo avenues around 12:10 a.m., according to police.

A speeding Honda Civic drove onto a sidewalk at San Pablo and Columbia Avenues, police said.

The Civic struck several businesses, trees, garbage cans and benches before coming to rest down the block on Van Fleet Avenue, according to police.

The driver fled as officers arrived but was taken into custody a short distance away from the crash scene, police said.

Pedestrians were in the area during the crash but there were no serious injuries, according to police.

The road was closed for about three hours as police investigated the scene.

A large amount of debris was cleared from the roadway by city cleanup crews, police said.

The driver, whose identity was not released, was a 25-year-old Berkeley man booked into the Contra Costa County Martinez Detention facility on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and resisting arrest.
