VALLEJO (CBS SF) — Officers arrested a San Francisco man who robbed a gas station in Vallejo and then attempted to flee in a stolen truck Saturday morning, police said.

At about 8:20 a.m. police responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress at the Chemco gas station at the intersection of Springs Road and Maple Avenue in Vallejo, police said.

The gas station clerk told police that a black man wearing a white construction-type hard hat and an orange vest had entered the store and pointed a 9mm handgun at him before jumping over the front counter, police said.

While the clerk locked himself in a janitor’s closet, the suspect took money from the register, police said.

The suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Eric Johnson, drove away from the gas station in a reddish orange Chevrolet truck, police said.

The clerk called police and gave them a description of the truck and suspect, according to police.

A Vallejo police officer spotted the truck traveling on westbound Interstate Highway 80 a short time later and followed it.

When Johnson exited the highway at Magazine Street in South Vallejo, he was traveling at excessive speeds in an attempt to flee from police, officers said.

The officer followed Johnson and activated his emergency lights and siren while attempting to initiate a stop on the truck.

Two Vallejo police vehicles pursued the suspect to the 200 block of Gary Circle, where Johnson lost control of the truck and hit three parked cars, police said.

Johnson got out of the truck and attempted to flee from police on foot through a front yard.

Officers caught up with Johnson and a struggle ensued. Officers used a Taser to subdue Johnson, police said.

Johnson was arrested for robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police found evidence of the robbery as well as a replica handgun in the truck, which was reported stolen out of Suisun City later in the morning, according to police.

No officers or civilians were injured and no police cars were damaged during the pursuit, according to police.
