3-Year Old Boy Critically Hurt After Being Hit By Pickup Truck in San Francisco's Richmond District

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A 3-year-old boy on a bicycle was critically injured after he was struck by a pickup truck in San Francisco's Richmond District late Thursday morning, a police spokesman said.

Around 11:45 a.m., a collision involving a silver Dodge pickup truck and a child on a bike was reported on Fulton Street and 43rd Avenue, according to San Francisco police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy.

The truck was heading north on 43rd Avenue and the driver was making a left turn onto westbound Fulton Street, Shyy said.

"The child had a green light and was crossing the crosswalk.  The family was walking a few feet behind him," Shyy said.  "When the vehicle made a left turn, it struck the child.  The vehicle continued a short way and realized they may have struck something, made a u-turn and discovered they had struck this child."

Initially police said the child was 4 years old, but have since clarified his age.

The boy was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition, Shyy said. No one else was injured.

The driver, who had at least one other passenger in his truck, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Shyy said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, he said.

Many neighbors in the area said they have concerns about cars traveling at a high rate of speed, especially when it comes to their children crossing busy streets.

The 5-Fulton bus line was rerouted around the area for about two hours after the crash, San Francisco Municipal Railway spokesman Paul Rose said.

Around 2:20 p.m., the crash site had been cleared and the buses returned to their usual route.
