Surveillance Video Shows Teen Stowaway Climbing Into Wheel Well of Jet

HONOLULU (KCBS) -- Airport surveillance video could dispel doubts that a 15-year-old boy from the Bay Area actually hitched a ride aboard a passenger jet and flew from San Jose Mineta International Airport to Maui over the weekend, and survived the flight.

CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues said sources tell him that the boy can be seen on the video jumping a fence at San Jose Airport, crossing the tarmac and jumping into the wheel-well of a Hawaiian Airlines 767.

"According to my sources, there is video of the teen jumping a fence and going to the nearest plane on the tarmac in San Jose."

Aviation officials said boy is "lucky to be alive."

San Jose airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said they are checking to see how the boy scaled the fence. At the time, they are just relieved that the boy survived such a harrowing ordeal.

"He scaled the fence under cover of darkness," said Barnes.

The unidentified teen reportedly passed out during the flight...and woke up when the jet was on the tarmac in Maui. He was questioned by the FBI and taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

Some say the incident should serve as a wake-up call to improve security measures at our nation's airports.
