RICHMOND (CBS SF) – A lockdown prompted by a shooting across from Kennedy High School in Richmond Wednesday morning has been lifted and the student who was shot is being treated for wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 14-year-old Kennedy High student was shot in the leg around 8:30 a.m. across the street from the campus at the intersection of South 41st Street and Cutting Boulevard, according to Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov.

After being shot the boy ran onto campus to get help and emergency responders were called to the scene. The student was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting and police are attempting to identify and locate suspects.

Abetkov said investigators are looking into reports of a fight in John F. Kennedy Park, located across the street from Kennedy High, just before the gunfire broke out. However, a motive for the shooting has not been determined.

The school was placed on lockdown just after the shooting, although arriving students were still allowed to enter the campus, Abetkov said.

The lockdown was lifted a short time before 10 a.m. and police officers remained in the area, according to West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Marcus Walton.

“Richmond police have responded in force to the area and we’re confident that the students on campus are safe,” Walton said.

Counselors and other district staff are on hand today to speak with students and parents, he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Richmond police at (510) 233-1214. Callers who prefer to remain anonymous may call (510) 232-TIPS.
