NOVATO (CBS SF) — The dozen of grass fires that popped up around Novato since Wednesday are likely the work of an arsonist, police said. The fires were all set Friday between midnight and 3 a.m. at multiple locations within the same area of South Novato. The majority were brush fires, but two involved a car and the front door of a townhouse. One resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after trying to put out the flames. Investigators are collecting what evidence they have at each location to see if it will lead to a suspect or suspects. “We just want to reach out to the public and get the public support in calling in and being vigilant about watching people late at night and even during the day for suspicious people,” Novato Police Lt. Oliver Collins said. The cluster of fires is a familiar situation for residents–two years ago an arsonist set a total of 60 fires over a few months. No one was ever arrested. Novato police say they are pulling records from those fires to see if there is a connection. So far, the only connection is the location of the fires. All the fires were put out quickly. The Novato police and fire are meeting with arson investigators on Friday to determine the cause.
