Woman In Coma Gives Birth To Healthy Boy At UCSF

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A pregnant woman from Fresno who has been in a coma since March gave birth via C-section at UCSF Thursday.

Melissa Carleton had been in a coma since having surgery for a brain tumor in March, but doctors successfully delivered a healthy baby boy.

Her husband Brian Lande was tending to baby West, and his wife, who is able to nurse the baby with some assistance. The family is celebrating a victory after not knowing if both mom and child would make it this far.

"This is a story of joy, and it's not lost on us that this is a story about Brian and his love. He has taken care of our daughter in a way that parents can only hope for, and that's a credit to Melissa, because (she) chose him," grandfather John Farrell said.

Melissa remained in a coma Thursday night. The family says she can open her eyes, but has yet to fully recover from the coma.
