NFL Unveils Super Bowl 50th Anniversary Logo For Game At Levi's Stadium
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The National Football League has unveiled the logo for the 50th anniversary edition of the Super Bowl to be played at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara - and it's a break from tradition.
Instead of the standard Roman numerals used with Super Bowls, the NFL is using the numeral '50' instead of the Roman numeral 'L.'
The logo features the now-standardized image of the Lombardi Trophy and the words 'Super Bowl' superimposed over a gold-colored '50.' According to the NFL:
While continuing to feature the Vince Lombardi Trophy as the centerpiece of the Super Bowl logo, the use of "50" makes a bold statement about the Super Bowl and the historic 50th game. The gold "50" aligns with the preeminence of the Super Bowl, the silver trophy, and reflects the host region's historic Gold Rush in the broader setting of the Golden State.
An alternate version includes a graphic image of Levi's Stadium, silhouettes of the San Francisco skyline within the gold '50,' and 'San Francisco Bay Area' text along with the date '02.07.2016.'
The logo design builds on the permanent Super Bowl identity established in 2011 for Super Bowl XLV that positions the Lombardi Trophy with the host stadium. The Super Bowl 50 regional logo features the Lombardi Trophy in front of Levi's Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers. Reflected in the gold 50 are some of the iconic landmarks of the San Francisco Bay Area ghosted by the fog.
Previous Super Bowl logos were unique creations that changed from year to year. Starting with the 2011 Super Bowl (XLV), the theme of the logo was standardized with the Lombardi trophy image and the only differences from year to year being the stadium backdrop and the Roman numerals for that game.
The NFL said after Super Bowl 50, the Roman numerals will return for Super Bowl LI.
