California DMV To Produce Retro-Looking Black And Yellow License Plates

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) -- Drivers in the Golden State can take a trip down memory lane, no matter what vehicle they own. The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced this week they will issue some retro-looking license plates.

The DMV said they have reached the minimum 7,500 applications needed to begin production of "legacy" license plates with black background and yellow lettering, which was the style originally issued from 1963-1969.

Drivers who pre-ordered the plates will receive them sometime in the next few months.

Motorists also have the opportunity to order plates in other classic styles, including the 1950s black on yellow plates, and the 1970s and 80s yellow on blue plates. The DMV said these styles need 6,000 orders each by the end of the year to be produced.

According to the DMV, the plates won't look exactly like the classic plates from those eras because of modern manufacturing processes and current law requires plates to be reflectorized.

The legacy plates can be used on any vehicle, new or old.
