Tourists Claim Proof Of Ghostly Figure On Alcatraz

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Alcatraz has been considered by some to be one of the most haunted places in America. A couple of tourists said they have photographic proof.

More than a million tourists visit the former prison each year.

A British couple snapped an eerie photo of what looks like a turn of the 20th century woman staring straight at their camera. The couple completely believes it was a spirit.

The picture was taken in the old visitation area of the prison, which had criminals on one side and visitors on the other, separated by thick bulletproof glass.

Former Alcatraz prison guard George DeVincenzi, who worked on The Rock for eight years in the 1960s, told KPIX 5 that he thought it was shadows.

When asked if he experienced any ghosts at the prison, the guard said, "No. Personally I don't believe in ghosts."

In its 29 years as a federal prison, there were eight murders on Alcatraz, zero executions, and no one was buried there.
