(KCBS) – Russia’s World Cup team manager is blaming a green laser pointed at his goalie from the stands for his team’s elimination.

Russia gave up a goal late in the game, and their 1-1 draw with Algeria kept the Russians from advancing to the next round.

“We had that in (pro football), but it was a long time ago – 15 to 20 years ago – and they stopped it right away,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.

Video shows the laser beam darting across the face of the Russian goalie, but it’s not clear if it affected his concentration or his vision.

“They can’t fool around with people doing it in stadiums,” Madden said. “I know (about) soccer-crazy fans, but they can’t let them do that… When that gets started or gets to be an idea or gets to be out there, it needs to be squelched right away.” (6:20)
