San Francisco Hotel Room Rates Reach All-Time High, Average $200 A Night

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The cost for travelers to stay in a San Francisco hotel room has reached an all-time high, according to newly-released numbers by the City Controller's office.

Visitors can now expect to pay an average of $200 a night, a jump of almost 40 percent in five years. In 2009, the average hotel stay cost $123 a night.

Busy and pricey hotels are helping the city's bottom line. A tariff on hotel rooms has netted more than $270 million in the fiscal year ending June 30th.

According to the San Francisco Travel Association, there are more than 33,600 hotel rooms in the city's 215 hotels.

Earlier this month, a TripAdvisor survey found San Francisco is the least affordable vacation destination in the United States, and among the most expensive travel spots in the world.
