SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – John Madden can smell it. Football is in the air.

“I was thinking about the 4th of July tomorrow, and how big that’s always been in my life,” Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. “I go back to when I was a player, I always started seriously working out the day after the 4th. And you think ‘boy that’s strange,’ I mean guys work out year round now to get ready. And we used to start the day after the 4th. And then as a coach, it was the same thing. Vacation was over and football started the day after the 4th.”

This year, most NFL teams will open training camp in three weeks. To Madden, there’s one other football item tied to the holiday.

“The 4th of July was Al Davis’ birthday.” (7:15)
