HAYWARD (CBS SF) — Hayward police officers shot and killed a man they said was acting erratically in a hotel early Sunday morning, police said Tuesday.

Police were called to the Phoenix Lodge at 500 West A Street just after 4 a.m. on Sunday regarding a suspect who had forced his way into a tenant’s room, according to Sgt. Ryan Cantrell.

Officers found Jeffrey McKinney still in the room, refusing to leave and acting erratically, Cantrell said.

McKinney did not cooperate with officer’s efforts to persuade him to leave the room, and when police entered the room he allegedly lunged at them and attempted to disarm one of them, Cantrell said.

“In order to protect their own safety, two officers were required to discharge their firearms, to stop his aggression,” Cantrell said in a statement Tuesday.

Officers rendered first aid, but McKinney was declared dead a short time later at the scene.

Hayward police and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting and the officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.
