Man Sets Small Fire Inside Baggage Claim Area At Oakland Airport

OAKLAND (KCBS) — Police are investigating a small fire that was started by a man inside the Oakland International Airport early Friday morning.

TSA employees witnessed a man in his 60s setting fire to a pile of cardboard debris next to a trash can that was inside the Terminal 1 baggage claim area at about 3.a.m.

Firefighters were called but he TSA employees were about to extinguish the fire before they arrived. The wall, in the Jet Blue area, was singed black about 7 feet high with a pile charred cardboard that was still wet nearby.

The man, who was not a passenger, was arrested and there were no injuries reported.

Police said the incident happened in the public area of the airport and that there was not a security breech.

All operations at the airport are normal.
