9-Year Old Girl Shot By Stray Bullet While Playing In West Oakland Park

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A 9-year-old girl was injured in a shooting Saturday evening while she was playing in Lowell Park in West Oakland, police said Sunday.

At 5:16 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 1200 block of Filbert Street near West Oakland Middle School and Lowell Park.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of male suspects, all armed with firearms. The suspects then shot multiple rounds at each other, police said.

During the shooting, a 9-year-old girl who was playing in the park was struck by one of the rounds, according to police.

The girl is in stable condition and expected to survive, police said.

The Oakland Police Department released a statement Sunday afternoon alerting the public that additional patrols have been assigned to the area following the shooting and that investigators are working to identify and apprehend the shooters.

"This incident underscores the easy accessibility to guns in our community and individuals willing to use them against each other," the Oakland Police Department said in a statement today.

Another West Oakland shooting occurred on 10th Street near Campbell Street about three hours later, leaving one person with a gunshot wound to the foot, according to Oakland police Officer J. Moore.

One suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and has not been located, he said.

A short time after midnight, a victim suffered a graze wound in a shooting near the intersection of Magee Avenue and Kansas Street in Oakland's Laurel District, Moore said.

At about 5:05 a.m. today, a person was shot in the 2100 block of East 12th Street, the officer said. That victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Moore said two suspects fled the scene.

No suspects had been arrested in connection with any of the shootings as of Sunday afternoon.

Anyone with information regarding these shootings is urged to contact the Oakland Police Department's Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3326.
