SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) — Police in Santa Clara are searching for a man who was captured on surveillance video attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill while making a purchase at a drug store on July 15, a spokesman said.

The man entered the CVS Pharmacy in the Winchester Shopping Center at 3081 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Santa Clara, picked up some items to buy and then stood waiting his turn with the cashier, police Lt. Kurt Clarke said.

He then gave the cashier a $100 bill that the employee then held up to check if it was valid, Clarke said.

The suspect and the cashier had a conversation about the bill, during which the suspect stood for a while and then exited the store after the employee refused to accept it, police said.

The man is suspected of trying to make a purchase with counterfeit U.S. currency, which is a felony, Clarke said.

The failed transaction was recorded in color by the store’s surveillance system and the video was turned over to police, who released it to the public on YouTube today in an effort to locate the suspect, according to Clarke.

The video shows the adult male suspect, who is bald, walking into the store with a red lanyard on his neck and wearing a long light blue t-shirt, light blue pants and black shoes.

Police are urging anyone who recognizes the suspect or has further information related to the case to contact Sgt. MacFarlane of the Santa Clara Police Department at (408) 615-4818.
