SF Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant Gets Angry Phone Calls In Confusion Over Similarly-Named Monterey Eatery That Banned Noisy Kids

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A longtime San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf restaurant has been receiving angry calls over the past few days from people confusing it with a similarly-named Monterey restaurant that has banned noisy kids from the premises.

No. 9 Fishermen's Grotto in San Francisco has been in business at its same Fisherman's Wharf spot since 1935. This week, it has been getting phone calls from people confusing it with Old Fisherman's Grotto at Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf, where the ownership has placed a sign outside saying unruly children are not welcome. The sign also says strollers, high chairs, and booster chairs are not allowed.

There is no affiliation between the two restaurants.

Anthony Geraldi, a partner of the San Francisco Fishermen's Grotto and great-grandson of the restaurant's founder says his staff has been busy clearing up the confusion. "We've definitely gotten a number of people that are confused with the two places," said Geraldi. "We have to sort of talk them out of it and convince them [they have the wrong place]."

Geraldi said he wants to make people know the other restaurant is "the opposite of who we are" and that all ages are welcome at his establishment. "We're not necessarily saying their policy is right or wrong, but we are a family-oriented business, said Geraldi."  No. 9 Fishermen's Grotto also has the kids' menu to prove it.

Monterey's Old Fisherman's Grotto owner, Chris Shake, said he doesn't care if some people are offended. "If you don't like it, eat somewhere else," said Shake. "If a place has the rules, that's what the rules are, you go in and abide by the rules or you find a place that's more suitable to your dining."
