Suspect Befriends Victim Over Coffee Before Allegedly Robbing Him In Palo Alto

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) -- A man who made the acquaintance of his victim just before robbing him in Palo Alto on Wednesday night remains at large, police said.

The suspect started a conversation with the male victim outside of a convenience store and convinced him to go for a cup of coffee before robbing him of his wallet around 11:30 p.m. in the 300 block of University Avenue, police said.

The suspect fled northbound on Waverley Street and was seen by a witness who assisted the victim and notified the police.

The victim claims he was pepper sprayed by the suspect, but officers reported that the victim showed no signs of exposure to pepper spray and found no evidence of discharged pepper spray at the scene of the crime.

The suspect is described as a black male, between his twenties and forties, about five feet eight inches tall and clean shaven in all black clothing and a white cap, according to police.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Palo Alto police's 24 hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.
