MENLO PARK (CBS SF) — The shooting of a Chihuahua in East Menlo Park earlier this month is being investigated by the Peninsula Humane Society, who has offered a $1,000 reward for information about it, Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA officials said Monday.

The 4- or 5-year-old Chihuahua was found in the 1300 block of Henderson Avenue on Aug. 1, humane society officials said. It was alive but in pain, unable to walk and had no identifying tags.

The dog was taken to a shelter and examined by a veterinarian, who discovered the dog had been shot in the hindquarters, according to the humane society.

The bullet severed the 6-pound dog’s spine leaving it with no hope of regaining use of its back legs or hips and no control over its own urination and defecation, humane society officials said.

The dog was humanely euthanized that day.

The humane society is looking for information to identify a suspect in the case who could face charges of felony animal cruelty. It has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction.

Anyone with information about the dog’s shooting has been asked to call lead investigator Christina Hanley at (650) 340-7022, ext. 384.
