According to the Marin County Sheriff's Office, Williams was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Tiburon home on Monday.

"He always had a smile on his face; he was always like, 'Hey!' And that was the nice thing," Joanne Dunning, a neighbor who lives right across the street, said. "He's like almost a family member that dies; it's sad."

Bill, another neighbor who didn't give his last name said that, said that he'd known Williams casually for a few years said what struck him was an underlying sadness that lingered just beyond the laughter and the comedic talent.

"I don't know his situation—how bad it was—but I just wish he would have talked to somebody or got some kind of help or whatever," he said, adding the world was a poorer place without Williams in it.

Cinnamon, a server at Sam's Anchor Café said that Williams was a regular for many years.

"He would come in because he was in the area and he would sit at a table, sometimes with his back to everyone but a great tipper—just nice and pleasant," she said.

She also said he was very accommodating when approached by patrons and employees. When a young hostess recently asked for an autograph, Williams told her "it's because of you, my fans that I'm able to enjoy dinners and other successes so absolutely, I'll give you an autograph."

The Marin County Sheriff's Office is scheduled to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. to release more information on Williams' death. KCBS will be there.
