Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'My Old Lady'

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews the film "My Old Lady," a dramedy about a man (Kevin Kline) inheriting a Paris apartment from his late father, which comes with some complications by way of an occupant (Maggie Smith) who isn't willing to leave.

MY OLD LADY (R) 107 min.

The good news is that down-on-his-luck American Kevin Kline visits Paris to claim a gorgeous apartment left to him by his father. The bad news: there is a strong French legal tradition about French resale. In this case, meaning that crusty British senior Maggie Smith, along with her angry daughter Kristen Scott Thomas, is staying put and getting in the way of his one hope having money to live on. There's a labyrinth of secrets that separate and unites the trio with Israel Horowitz's script and direction based on his play. The cinematography of the backstreets and main streets of Paris make this an amazing trip to the City of Lights. There are also three terrific actors reminding us that making peace with your past is the only way to move forward. Not a great film, but gentle and smart as well as a trip to Paris.
