1 Injured In 5-Car Crash With Jack-Knifed Big Rig Near Petaluma
PETALUMA (CBS SF) -- One person was injured in a five-car collision involving a jack-knifed big rig Friday afternoon on state Highway 116 south of Petaluma.
The collision occurred just before 3:30 p.m. when Sonoma resident Joe Carl Scoma, 61, was driving west on Lakeville Highway/state Highway 116 just a few hundred feet west of the intersection with Stage Gulch Road, according to the CHP.
Scoma slowed down prior to attempting to make a left turn into a driveway on the south side of the road and made eye contact with a driver waiting in the left-hand turn lane on to Stage Gulch Road, officials said.
The other driver allowed Scoma to make the left turn in front of him, but an eastbound Freightliner truck with two trailers attached struck Scoma's Accord as he turned.
The big rig jackknifed and went off the south edge of the road, hitting a fence. The trailers ended up blocking the eastbound lane.
Scoma's Accord, meanwhile, spun counterclockwise and struck a Toyota Corolla waiting in the eastbound left-hand turn lane. The Corolla then struck a Volkswagen Jetta and the Jetta hit a vehicle with a trailer, making a total of five vehicles involved in the crash.
The Accord came to a stop blocking the westbound traffic lane and the left-hand turn lane to Stage Gulch Road.
Scoma was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, although CHP officials did not indicate the extent to his injuries.
The road remained closed until just after 5 p.m.
