Sierra Wildfire Forces Evacuation Of Dozens Of Homes
GRASS VALLEY (CBS/AP) -- A wildfire burning on heavily forested land in Northern California has forced the evacuation of dozens of homes.
The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sierra Nevada foothills about halfway between Sacramento and Reno and quickly grew to 150 acres.
Three structures have been destroyed, but it wasn't immediately clear what they were.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a statement that crews are starting to make progress against the blaze. It was 10 percent contained as night fell.
The evacuated homes are in the community of Alta Sierra about five miles south of Grass Valley. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation shelter at Bear River High School.
