SF Supervisor London Breed Says 49ers Should Sit Ray McDonald During Investigation
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) -- San Francisco supervisor London Breed spoke to KPIX 5's Phil Matier on Sunday morning about her nonbinding resolution -- passed unanimously in a vote held last Tuesday by the board of supervisors -- which calls for the 49ers to keep Ray McDonald from playing until Santa Clara County authorities conclude an investigation of felony domestic violence charges against the star defensive end.
Breed's resolution states that "while criminal defendants are innocent until proven guilty and prosecutors must prove charges beyond a reasonable doubt, the threshold of accountability should rightly be lower for decisions about participating in a corporate athletic event for the public's entertainment."
Speaking on Sunday, Breed defended the city of San Francisco's official interest in the 49ers -- who now both practice and play in Santa Clara -- by noting that the former San Francisco-based team has not changed its name.
"They have our name. They're the San Francisco 49ers still. If they want to change their name to the Santa Clara 49ers, be my guest. There would be no need for us to pass a resolution. They're still important for us to bring issues of domestic violence to the forefront," Breed told KPIX 5.
