Selfie Mountain: Mission Peak In Fremont Becomes Crowded With Photo-Obsessed Hikers

FREMONT (KPIX 5) – Social media may be behind the sudden popularity of a park in the East Bay. Visitors are scaling Mission Peak in Fremont by the hundreds, and nearly all of them snapping a selfie with the totem at the top.

A search on Instagram of the hashtag #MissionPeak yielded more than 30 posts from Monday alone and more than 100 pictures uploaded over the weekend. Some pictures showed hikers bringing their dogs along.

Recently, neighbors have complained about noisy crowds, trash and traffic. But every photo that goes up seems to inspire another.

Joseph Wong shared the pic he took with his friends on a hike Monday. "I think it's just like once someone sees it on Instagram, they're like, 'Wait, they did that?' I can do that, too," Wong said. "I found out about this hike through Instagram."

"There's huge crowds up top," hiker Eric Calande said. "They all want to get a picture with the post that's up there. And you know it's understandable, but at the same time you know you have to respect the park."

Starting on September 29th, the park will close early at 7:30 p.m. The East Bay Regional Park District is also considering parking fees or permits to try to cut down on the crowds.
