CHP Helicopter Crew Rescues Man Injured In ATV Accident On Mount Vaca
VACAVILLE (CBS SF) -- A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew rescued a 63-year-old Vacaville man who was injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash in unincorporated Solano County on Sunday evening.
The man lost control of the ATV and was ejected on a trail in steep terrain north of 2,819-foot Mount Vaca, CHP officials said.
He was not wearing a helmet, suffered a large laceration to his head and complained of head and neck pain. Another rider said the injured man was knocked unconscious, according to the CHP.
The Solano County CHP office in Fairfield called for assistance from the helicopter unit at the Napa County airport around 6:30 p.m. Vacaville Fire Department personnel also responded with off-road vehicles and by hiking to the injured man, CHP officials said.
CHP paramedic/flight officer Matt Gutierrez and pilot Pete Gavitte responded and hoisted the injured man from the rugged terrain. He was flown to a nearby field and then airlifted to a trauma center, according to the CHP.
CHP officials said it would have taken hours to remove the injured man from the steep trail without the helicopter.
