Carjacking Victim Defies Gunman Who Steals Her SUV, Flees Across Two Bridges, Before Crashing In SF Financial District
RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- A Richmond woman gave a harrowing account of coming face-to-face with an armed carjacker Thursday, who ended up shot dead by police in San Francisco's Financial District.
The drama began outside the home of the woman, who went by the name of 'Olga.' She walked out to a dark and rainy morning just before 5:00 a.m. to drive to the gym.
As soon as Olga got into the driver's seat of her Cadillac Escalade, the gunman got into the passenger seat.
"He pointed the gun at me, and he's, like, 'You're gonna drive away'. And I immediately started saying 'no, no!'"
She refused to go with him and thought about her two young children sleeping inside.
"I'm not going anywhere," she said she told the carjacker. "If you're going to shoot me, it's going to be here where my family knows where I'm at."
Olga said she jumped out of the SUV and the man drove off, leading police on a chase that would last more than an hour, over both the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge.
It ended with the Escalade overturning at Battery and California streets in downtown San Francisco, with the gunman opening fire on good Samaritans who went to his aid.
One of them was hit but was expected to recover."We don't know if the good Samaritan was shot or hit by a bullet, it's just some sort of a fragment hit him in the chest," said San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr.
The gunman was shot dead by officers after pointing his gun in their direction, police said.
"I don't know what the outcome would have been if I would've been with him," said Olga.
