Quake-Displaced Elementary School Students Enjoying High School Experience In American Canyon

AMERICAN CANYON (CBS SF) -- American Canyon High School students are getting a kick out of the fourth-graders running through campus, displaced from quake-damaged Napa Junction Elementary.

Since the earthquake, the fourth-graders have made their own mark at AC High, turning the quad into a playground.

The normally "cool" high-schoolers don't seem to mind a bit.

Once in their classrooms, the fourth grade kids seem to appreciate the larger, more comfortable desks made for teens.

Their teachers say this unplanned field trip has brought their classes closer together and has convinced the kids that high school will be no sweat.

"I thought it would be much more scarier," said one student. "Five more years until I can come to this school and do what they do…if the school's still here," said another.

Among the unexpected challenges: "Teaching them how to walk up and down the stairs," said fourth grade teacher Caitie Ireland. "That was tough!  They just wanted to run down them…on both sides."

Lunch does seem a little lonely for them and most are looking forward to getting back to their old school.

But one thing the mini high-schoolers say they'll miss are the high fives they get from the big kids on the way back to class.

Repairs to the Napa Junction Elementary should be completed by October 13.
