First Case Of Enterovirus 68 Confirmed In Solano County

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) - Solano County officials confirmed Thursday that a child has tested positive for enterovirus.

"This is the first case of enterovirus D-68 reported to Solano Public Health this year," said Dr. Bela Matyas, Solano County Health Officer and Health and Social Services Deputy Director. "The child suffered from mild symptoms and was not hospitalized."

The California Department of Public Health reports that eight cases of EV-D68 are on record in California so far this year.

Earlier Thursday Alameda County health officials confirmed the first Bay Area cases from the outbreak, which has been reported widely in the Midwest.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 500 cases of enterovirus spread across in 42 states. Enterovirus has been found in deceased patients, but it is not clear what role the disease played in those deaths.

Health officials say, to prevent upper respiratory infections, practice thorough hand washing.

If you or your child develops sustained weakness in one or more limbs, call your doctor and get rapid medical attention.

If your child is sick, with an upper respiratory infection, they should stay home as long as they show symptoms.
