Uptick In Algae Leaving Moldy Aftertaste In East Bay Water

CONCORD (CBS SF) -- Residents who live in the Contra Costa Water District say their tap water has been tasting strange lately.

Francesa Rago picked up on it when the hot weather hit in Concord.

"I did notice something this summer," she said. It was strange odor in the water flowing out of her faucet. "It did seem to have an organic quality to it," she said. "It just smelled unpleasant and strong."

The Contra Costa Water District says it's not your imagination. There is something musty in your tap water.

"Usually we'll see an algae bloom come in when the weather's been warm," said Contra Costa Water District spokeswoman Jennifer Allen.

It is that uptick in algae that is leaving a moldy aftertaste in tap water all over the county.

"It is important for customers to know that the water is completely safe," Allen said. "It is an aesthetic issue."

One that is not all that uncommon. The district is treating the water to get rid of the strange taste. Treatment or not, Rago says this is yet another reason to stick to filtered water.

"I don't need to be drinking extra algae," Rago said. "I have enough problems with my own health that I don't need to add to it."

The water district says until the treatment takes effect, customers can refrigerate their water or add lemon to get rid of the moldy taste.
