Teen Driver Arrested, Suspected of DUI After Pedestrian Fatally Struck In Palo Alto

PALO ALTO (KCBS)— A teenage driver has been arrested in Palo Alto after losing control of his car and striking a pedestrian who later died. Police say the driver was under the influence at the time of the early-Monday morning collision.

The incident happened around 6:15 a.m. when a Nissan Altima traveling south on East Bayshore Road along Highway 101somehow left the roadway, struck a power pole and flipped over.

Palo Alto Police arrested 19-year-old Miguel Torres of Sunnyvale on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He was booked for vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and driving without a license.The driver was uninjured, but the pedestrian who was either jogging or walking was struck and killed.

Victor Garcia, who works at a nearby International School of the Peninsula, said drunk drivers are better off paying for a cab.

"Just be careful out there, you know? If you're going to drink, don't drive. Even if you survive this type of thing, you kill a pedestrian; you're going to live with that you know?"

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office will release the name of the pedestrian once his next-of-kin is notified of the death.
