Japan Shaken By Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake

CHIBA, Japan (CBS SF) -- A earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck off the coast of Japan Wednesday near Chiba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's automated seismograph alert network.

The quake struck at 4:53 UTC at a depth of 49km.  No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake was reportedly felt as far away as Tokyo.

No damage was immediately reported.
