Offshore 4.2 Magnitude Quake Shakes North Coast
EUREKA (CBS SF) -- An offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 shook the California North Coast region near Fortuna early Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The temblor struck about 24 miles south-southwest of Fortuna at 7:24 a.m. at a depth of about 14 miles, according to the USGS.
The quake occurred along the 810-mile-long San Andreas Fault which extends from northern California south to the Cajon Pass near San Bernardino in southern California, according to the USGS.
On Saturday, two much-smaller earthquakes, both with a magnitude of 2.6, shook parts of Santa Clara and Monterey counties along the San Andreas Fault.
