Gov. Brown Appoints Berkeley Business Lawyer, SF Superior Court Judge, To State Court Of Appeal
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A former State Bar of California president and a San Francisco Superior Court judge were appointed to the state Court of Appeal in San Francisco Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Former bar president and current business lawyer Jon Streeter, 58, of Berkeley, and Judge Marla Miller, 59, of San Francisco, were named by Brown to the First District Court of Appeal.
The court is based in San Francisco and is one of six regional appeals courts in the state. It hears appeals from trial courts in 12 Bay Area and northern coastal counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma counties.
The court's 20 judges hear cases in panels of three.
Streeter and Miller must be confirmed by the state Commission on Judicial Appointments before they can take office. A commission hearing has not yet been set.
Streeter was State Bar president in 2011-12 and Bar Association of San Francisco president in 2004. He has been a partner in the law firm of Keker and Van Nest LLP in San Francisco since 1997.
Streeter was previously an associate and then a partner at Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe LLP from 1981 to 1996. He received his college degree from Stanford University and his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
Miller was appointed to San Francisco Superior Court by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. She previously was a partner in the law firm of Morrison and Foerster LLP in San Francisco for eight years.
Miller served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco from 1987 to 1992 and as chief assistant district attorney in San Francisco in 1996.
She practiced law in the firm of Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk and Rabkin from 1981 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1996. Miller received her undergraduate and law school degrees from Harvard University.
The commission that will decide whether to confirm Streeter and Miller will be made up of California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Attorney General Kamala Harris and First District Court of Appeal Senior Presiding Justice Anthony Kline.
Also on Wednesday, Brown appointed federal prosecutor Thomas Stevens and Alameda attorney Noel Wise to Alameda County Superior Court.
Stevens, 48, of Piedmont, has served in the Oakland branch of the U.S. Attorney's Office since 2008 and has been chief of the branch office since 2013. He previously worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, a private law firm and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Wise, 46, of Alameda, is a partner in the Alameda-based WG+R Law Group, which she co-founded in 2006. She previously worked for PG&E Co., the law firm of Stoel Rives LLP and the U.S. Department of Justice.
